# Fruitmap > Fruitmap (https://fruitmap.org) is a free community map of fruit trees, bushes, nut trees and herbs growing in public places: parks, roadsides, abandoned orchards, forest edges. Anyone can mark a tree in a few seconds from a phone; everyone can find free fruit nearby. Running since 2010. Most trees are in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, but people have mapped fruit in more than 30 countries on five continents, from Iceland to Japan and from California to Argentina and Chile. About 16,000 public trees across 46 species. ## Key facts - Website: https://fruitmap.org (the old address fruitmap.sk redirects there in Slovak). - Languages: Slovak, Czech and English. Choose one with `?lang=sk`, `?lang=cs` or `?lang=en`; otherwise the browser language is used. The data is the same in every language. - Founded: 2010, as a semester project at the Digital Media Studio (Ateliér digitálnych médií, https://art.aku.sk/) of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. - Cost: free, no ads, no account needed to browse. - Size (October 2026): about 16,000 public trees, 46 species, over 450 contributors, more than 30 countries. - Most common species: apple, walnut, cherry, plum, yellow plum (mirabelle), mulberry, pear, elderberry, rose hip, hazelnut. - Contact: hello@fruitmap.org ## Where the trees are Fruitmap works anywhere in the world. - **Central Europe is the heart of the map.** Slovakia, where Fruitmap started, and the Czech Republic have by far the most trees. Austria, Hungary, Poland and western Ukraine follow. - **The United States comes next**, mostly California and Colorado, with more in Washington, Oregon, Missouri and Louisiana. - **The rest of Europe** has trees across the continent: the United Kingdom, Belgium, Romania, Germany, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Switzerland, Norway, Serbia, the Netherlands, Finland, North Macedonia, Portugal and Sweden. - **Far-flung trees** show up well beyond Europe too: Iceland (Reykjavík), Japan, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Israel, India and New Zealand. If you are somewhere with few trees on the map, you are welcome to start mapping. The app, the species list and the API work the same everywhere. ## Pages - `/` – the map. Filter by species, by category (trees, bushes, nuts, herbs) or to show only what is in season this month. - `/near` – "Near you": trees around the visitor's location, sorted by walking distance. - `/t/{id}` – one tree: species, ripening months, note, photo, who added it, when it was added and when someone last confirmed it is still there. - `/species` – all species with counts. - `/fruit/{slug}` – a species page with a description, ripening season and number of mapped trees, for example `/fruit/apple`, `/fruit/walnut`, `/fruit/wild-garlic`. - `/people` and `/people/{id}` – contributors ranked by the number of trees they mapped, and each contributor's public trees. - `/add` – mark a new tree. - `/about` – the story of the project. - `/api` – API documentation for people. - `/sitemap.xml` – sitemap index of the main pages, species pages and contributors. The map position and filters live in the URL hash, so a view can be shared as a link: ``` https://fruitmap.org/#map=13.2/48.7474/19.1426&s=1,4&cat=Bushes&season=1 ``` `map=zoom/latitude/longitude`, `s=` a comma-separated list of species ids, `cat=` a category (`Trees`, `Bushes`, `Nuts`, `Herbs`), `season=1` shows only species in season now. ## How contributing works 1. Find the spot: use the phone's GPS, tap the map, or let Fruitmap read the location from a photo's EXIF data. 2. Pick the species and optionally add a note (up to 500 characters) and a photo. 3. Signed-in users publish immediately. Anonymous contributors give an email address. Their tree stays private until they click the confirmation link we send. That link also creates their account and signs them in. Unconfirmed trees are removed after 30 days. 4. Accounts have an optional password. Signing in with a one-time link or code sent by email always works. 5. Trees can be added offline. The app queues them and uploads them when the connection returns. Keeping the map accurate: - Visitors can confirm a tree with "Still there" or "Picked some". The tree page shows when it was last confirmed and how many times. - Anyone can report a tree as gone, wrong species, wrong place, on private property, or other. Moderators review reports. - A tree is hidden automatically when three different devices report it gone and nobody has confirmed it since. ## Species Ripening months are typical for Central Europe (1 = January). Counts are public trees in October 2026. Slugs are the English ones used in `/fruit/{slug}`. ### Trees | id | English | Slovak | Czech | slug | ripens | trees | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | 1 | Apple tree | Jabloň | Jabloň | apple | 8–10 | 2968 | | 5 | Cherry tree | Čerešňa | Třešeň | cherry | 6–7 | 1761 | | 4 | Plum tree | Slivka | Švestka | plum | 7–9 | 1037 | | 38 | Yellow Plum (mirabelle) | Mirabelka | Mirabelka | yellow-plum | 7–8 | 872 | | 7 | Mulberry | Moruša | Moruše | mulberry | 6–7 | 835 | | 2 | Pear tree | Hruška | Hrušeň | pear | 8–10 | 738 | | 13 | Peach tree | Broskyňa | Broskev | peach | 7–9 | 275 | | 10 | Horse chestnut (not edible) | Pagaštan | Kaštan | horsechestnut | 9–10 | 218 | | 12 | Fig | Figa | Fíkovník | fig | 8–9 | 218 | | 8 | Sour cherry | Višňa | Višeň | sourcherry | 6–7 | 190 | | 3 | Apricot tree | Marhuľa | Meruňka | apricot | 6–7 | 159 | | 29 | Lemon | Citrón | Citron | lemon | 12–3 | 150 | | 36 | Rowan | Jeřáb | Jeřáb | rowan | 9–10 | 124 | | 28 | Orange | Pomaranč | Pomeranč | orange | 12–3 | 91 | | 16 | Greengage | Ringlota | Ryngle | greengage | 7–8 | 83 | | 26 | Quince | Dula | Kdouloň | quince | 10–11 | 75 | | 35 | Medlar | Mišpule | Mišpule | medlar | 10–11 | 35 | | 37 | Service Tree | Oskeruše | Oskeruše | service-tree | 9–10 | 28 | | 30 | Grapefruit | Grepfruit | Grapefruit | grapefruit | 12–3 | 26 | | 25 | Tangerine | Mandarinka | Mandarinka | tangerine | 11–1 | 3 | ### Nuts | id | English | Slovak | Czech | slug | ripens | trees | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | 6 | Walnut tree | Orech | Ořešák | walnut | 9–10 | 2780 | | 9 | Hazelnut | Lieska | Líska | hazelnut | 9–10 | 421 | | 20 | Sweet chestnut | Gaštan jedlý | Kaštan jedlý | chestnut | 9–10 | 207 | | 27 | Almond | Mandľa | Mandloň | almond | 8–9 | 62 | ### Bushes | id | English | Slovak | Czech | slug | ripens | trees | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | 17 | Elderberry | Baza čierna | Bez černý | elderberry | 8–9 | 620 | | 23 | Briar (rose hip) | Šípka | Šípek | briar | 9–11 | 596 | | 22 | Blackberry | Černice | Ostružiny | blackberry | 7–9 | 258 | | 40 | Hawthorn | Hloh | Hloh | hawthorn | 9–10 | 178 | | 14 | Strawberries | Jahody | Jahody | strawberries | 5–6 | 130 | | 24 | Grape | Hrozno | Hroznové víno | grape | 9–10 | 130 | | 31 | Bilberries | Čučoriedky | Borůvky | bilberries | 7–8 | 125 | | 21 | Raspberry | Maliny | Maliny | raspberry | 6–8 | 100 | | 33 | Chokeberry (aronia) | Arónie | Arónie | chokeberry | 8–9 | 81 | | 39 | Blackthorn (sloe) | Trnka | Trnka | blackthorn | 10–11 | 71 | | 11 | Red currant | Ríbezľa červená | Rybíz červený | redribes | 6–7 | 59 | | 18 | Black currant | Ríbezľa čierna | Rybíz černý | blackribes | 6–7 | 50 | | 41 | Sea Buckthorn | Rakytník | Rakytník | sea-buckthorn | 9–10 | 49 | | 46 | Wild Strawberry | Jahodník | Jahodník | wild-strawberry | 6–7 | 35 | | 34 | Cornel (cornelian cherry) | Drieň | Dřín | cornel | 8–9 | 32 | | 32 | Dogwood | Drieň obyčajný | Dřín obecný | dogwood | 8–9 | 28 | | 15 | Gooseberry | Egreš | Angrešt | gooseberry | 6–7 | 26 | | 19 | Josta (jostaberry) | Josta | Josta | josta | 6–7 | 10 | | 42 | Silverberry | Hlošina | Hlošina | silverberry | 9–10 | 4 | ### Herbs | id | English | Slovak | Czech | slug | ripens | trees | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | 45 | Wild Garlic (ramsons) | Cesnak medvedí | Medvědí česnek | wild-garlic | 3–5 | 119 | | 44 | Mint | Mäta | Máta | mint | 5–9 | 13 | | 43 | Lemon Balm | Medovka | Meduňka | lemon-balm | 5–9 | 5 | Current names, counts and seasons are always available from the public API. ## Public API Fruitmap has a free, public JSON API with all species and all public trees, no key needed. See https://fruitmap.org/api. Please credit "Data: Fruitmap, fruitmap.org". ## Data and licence Tree positions, notes and photos are contributed by users. Part of the Czech data is imported weekly from na-ovoce.cz. Use the data freely with attribution: "Data: Fruitmap, fruitmap.org". Photos belong to their authors. The map uses OpenStreetMap data through OpenFreeMap tiles (© OpenStreetMap contributors). ## Picking etiquette - Take what you can use. Leave some for others and for wildlife. - Respect private property. Trees on the map are on or next to public land unless the note says otherwise. If a tree turns out to be private, report it. - Do not damage trees. Do not break branches or climb fragile trees. - Avoid fruit next to busy roads or sprayed fields, and wash what you pick. - Be sure what you eat. Horse chestnut is not edible, and some berries have poisonous look-alikes. - Help the next person: tap "Still there" when you find a tree, and report it if it is gone. ## Technology Single-page web app (Preact, TypeScript, MapLibre GL with OpenFreeMap vector tiles, Photon geocoding) on a PHP and MySQL backend. It installs as a Progressive Web App and works offline: the map tiles, species list and tree dataset are cached, and trees added offline upload later. Every page also has server-rendered content for search engines and language models. ## Contact hello@fruitmap.org
